The number three seems to have great gravitas in our culture. We had The Three Stooges (Larry, Curly and Moe), Donald Duck had three nephews (Huey, Dewey and Louie), there are the nursery rhymes about Three Blind Mice and about the Three Wise Men of Gotham who went to sea in a bowl (If the bowl had been stronger, My song had been longer.), Sid Caesar's "The 3 Haircuts" at

and of course, many religious references to three (The Holy Trinity, The Three Wise Men).
So how is it that when I and my wife go somewhere for dinner, just the two of us, that same number three keeps showing up.
At a local diner, we found three bread slices in a bread basket:
On another occasion, we found three pats of butter on this plate:
