Marmaduke Surfaceblow is a fictional character who inhabits Power. The magazine has been published for many years and the August 2009 issue has a story about Camp Century in northern Greenland 886 miles from the North Pole near the Thule Airbase on Baffin Bay. The mass of ice on Greenland has compressed the land in the center 1200 ft below sea level. The camp has 21 tunnels, including a Main Street 1100 ft long 40 ft below the ice cap surface. The tunnels were constructed during the Cold War to move nuclear rockets around the facility unobserved.
Marmaduke drinks a lot of alcohol and miraculously solves all sorts of mechanical problems. In this story, the small nuclear plant was down for re-shielding, one of three diesel generators had a broken crankshaft, another one died when he was visiting the camp, and I forgot what happened to the third one. Doesn't matter. Worn piston rings allowed diesel fuel to dilute the crankcase oil and the crankshaft journals seized. The engine was due for overhaul and they had all the new parts on hand, so they rebuilt the engine in the severe cold. Marmaduke's contribution was showing them how to light a fire under a drum of congealed engine oil so they could pour it into the crankcase. They also used a couple of smudge pots. They should all be dead with no power to ventilate the tunnel.
I wrote this post to ask if there was any truth to Camp Century, but I remembered to check Google and got lots of hits. Just scanning them, it appears that the nuclear plant was operated, the facility is now closed, and an ice core has been obtained at the location. Didn't see anything about Marmaduke.
